What should I do when my boiler breaks down?
First, make a note of any fault code shown on the display. You can check your heating programmer and thermostat and consult the boiler’s user instructions for permitted checks. Avoid repeated resets when a fault continues and never remove the casing or work on gas or electrical components.
How we investigate boiler faults
We use a systematic diagnostic approach guided by the boiler’s symptoms and the manufacturer’s instructions. Depending on the appliance, this can involve assessing system pressure, controls, circulation, combustion and relevant components or safety functions. Once a fault is identified, we explain what we have found and discuss the next steps and potential costs.
Repair first, replacement when it makes sense
We do not recommend a new boiler simply because the existing one has developed a fault. Where it is practical and economical, our intention is to repair it.
However, as with an older car, repeated costly repairs can become poor value. When replacement parts are expensive or hard to obtain, faults keep returning, or the appliance is approaching the end of its useful life, continuing to spend money may not be the best long-term decision. In those circumstances we may recommend considering a new boiler installation rather than another repair. The choice is explained and discussed with you.
Sometimes the issue is elsewhere in the heating system
Controls, circulation and poor system water quality can sometimes cause problems that appear to originate at the boiler. We investigate relevant factors and can advise on system cleaning and maintenance when appropriate.
Service or breakdown appointment?
Routine annual boiler servicing is not the same as fault diagnosis. If your boiler is already failing, please provide the symptoms in the form below so we can discuss the appropriate appointment and applicable charges.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if my boiler breaks down?
Check the user-accessible programmer, thermostat and displayed fault code, and consult your appliance instructions. Do not remove the casing or work on gas or electrical components.
Can you repair my boiler on the first visit?
Sometimes, depending on the fault, safe access and availability of parts. We cannot promise a same-day repair before diagnosis.
Is fault diagnosis included in a standard boiler service?
No. A boiler service is planned maintenance, while investigation of an existing fault may need a separately chargeable diagnostic attendance.
When is replacing a boiler better than repairing it?
We assess age, condition, parts availability, fault history and repair cost. We aim to repair viable boilers, but repeated spending on an ageing appliance may be poor value compared with replacement.
What details should I provide?
The manufacturer, model if known, fault code, whether heating or hot water works and a description of symptoms help us prepare.
What if I smell gas?
Leave the property where appropriate, avoid electrical switches or naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not use an online enquiry form for a gas emergency.
