Central Heating Inhibitor: Why It's Important for Your Boiler and Radiators

Expert advice from Can Do Plumbing, your local plumbing and heating specialist in Edinburgh.

As temperatures drop across Edinburgh and the colder months approach, homeowners naturally rely more heavily on their central heating systems. While many understand the importance of boiler servicing, fewer realise that the condition of the water circulating through their radiators can affect heating performance.

What is central heating inhibitor?

Inhibitor is a chemical treatment added to central heating water to help protect against corrosion and the build-up of harmful deposits. Products such as ADEY MC1+ Protector are designed to support the long-term condition of compatible systems when correctly dosed and maintained.

What happens without suitable protection?

Corrosion can produce iron oxide deposits, including magnetite, commonly called black sludge. Deposits can collect in radiators, pipework, pumps and heating components, contributing to poor circulation and uneven heating.

Warning signs can include radiators cold at the bottom, slow warming, unusual noises and inconsistent heating. These symptoms have several possible causes, so proper investigation is important.

Does inhibitor improve efficiency?

Helping prevent corrosion and deposits supports heat transfer and circulation, which can help a heating system operate effectively. However, inhibitor is preventative treatment, not a guaranteed reduction in bills.

Important: Adding inhibitor does not remove large quantities of sludge already present. Contaminated systems may require professional cleaning.

When should inhibitor be checked?

Water quality and inhibitor protection should be reviewed as part of ongoing heating maintenance, particularly after a system has been drained and refilled. Where needed, testing can guide suitable treatment and further investigation.

What if my system already contains sludge?

At Can Do Plumbing we can investigate heating performance and discuss cleaning using specialist equipment including ADEY MagnaCleanse. The appropriate approach depends on the heating system condition and manufacturer guidance. Following suitable cleaning, the system may be treated with inhibitor to help protect it going forward.
